Spacecraft’s journey began 40 years ago when company director, Sophie began to cultivate a patch in the garden of her childhood home.  The most amazing blue delphiniums grew which was the start of her love of herbaceous plants.  The borders in that happy 1970's garden left a lasting memory, a blueprint of colours and delight.

This early love of gardens led Sophie to study Landscape Architecture and she gained an honours degree in Landscape Design and a degree in Landscape Architecture with distinction.  A career in London followed where she worked for several practices in the capital on a wide variety of projects including The Royal Albert Hall South Steps, Smaralind Shopping Centre landscape in Reykjavik, waterfront landscape at Glasgow Science Centre, private and community gardens and the regeneration of many urban parks.  During this time, she became chartered with the Landscape Institute and won several awards.

After returning north, Sophie transformed her sister’s urban courtyard which re-invigorated her love of garden design, bringing to life that industrious seven year old gardener from the 1970’s.  The success of this project inspired Sophie to set up Spacecraft Garden Design Ltd to pass on that enjoyment and delight to you.  So, time to stop talking, come join us and start Spacecrafting...

the process

02 the process

Each outdoor space sits in its own context, creates its own microclimate and grows according to soil type and exposure to the elements.  The garden evolves uniquely to meet the needs of the people who use it.  That’s why at Spacecraft Garden Design we carefully consider each individual space and produce bespoke and responsive designs to find the best solution for your garden.  Put simply, we craft spaces.

Whether it’s for a garden, driveway, play area, nature space, kitchen garden, a single border or even an orchard, our aim is to make the garden transformation process easy and enjoyable for you.  We’ve simplified the process into three manageable sections called Design : Plant : Grow.  Call 07843 422492 to book a complimentary initial appointment with our designer or to just talk further.

The garden design process is divided into two stages - Garden Design and Construction Design.

Stage 1, the Spacecraft Garden Design Package will provide you with easy to understand, measured and scaled proposal plan which is the starting point for the transformation of your new garden.  This initial stage includes:

  1. Initial client meeting

  2. Development of client brief

  3. Site survey and analysis

  4. Garden design plan

  5. Mood board and garden notes

  6. Design review meeting

  7. Amendments to the garden design plan

Stage 2, the Spacecraft Construction Design Package, works from the agreed Garden Design Plan and will provide you with everything required to price and build your garden.  You can achieve this either by engaging a landscape contractor or you may wish to carry out the building work yourself.  Importantly, you will be guided through any requirements for construction work under the Construction, Design and Management Regulations 2015.  This second stage includes:-

  2. Landscape Specification document

  3. Any construction detail drawings required

  4. Landscape Works Pricing document

  5. Client briefing on Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015, if required
